Shadows give depth and form to your paintings. Shadow shapes, and the lightness or darkness of the shadows, help provide a convincing sense of three-dimensional form. Shadows are also important for showing the direction of light in a scene. It’s difficult to talk about shadows without also discussing light. When you paint objects from real life you are interpreting light. If your interpretation of light is convincing your shapes will create realistic looking forms. Pans VS Tubes Pans are easier to use because you have immediate access to the colours. You don't have to put your brush down, open a tube of paint, and squeeze a little color out. They are often preferred by painters for field sketches, visual journals, and plein air painting because of their compactness and portability. You may want to have both pans and small tubes of watercolour or gouache (opaque watercolour) in your art travel pack. Pans are less expensive than tubes, but are small and are better suited to small studies and paintings. They are only suitable for small brushes. Primary colors include yellow, blue, and red. These are colors that can’t be created by mixing of other colours. Instead, they combine to create secondary colors, which in turn combine to create tertiary colors. In effect, all colours stem from the three primaries. Red + Yellow = Orange Blue + Red = Purple Yellow + Blue = Green It is helpful to know which primary colours combine to make each secondary colour as they provide clues into which colours go well with the secondary colour. What is value in watercolour? Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour. A light value is pale and transparent, and a dark value is rich, deep and opaque. And we get value in watercolour by adding more or less water to the mixture. A thick mixture of a lot of paint with a little water will give you a dark value. A lot of water with only a touch of paint will be a light value.
